The Basics Of Area Rugs

When you want to place area rugs down in your room, you need to consider the size of the room and the size of the rug. You also need to decide how you are going to place the area rug in the room. If you are not sure how to make your rug look perfect, here are some basic tips to help you figure it out. Remember, it has to look good to you or else it won’t look good to anyone else.
Is Standard Size Right For You?
The most common standard size area rugs used are 2’x3’, 3’x5’ and 4’x6’. These sizes can make a big difference in the look of almost any room. These sizes usually don’t cover most of the floor so they are not placed to warm up the room. They are the right size to accent and highlight certain areas in the room like the fireplace, the sofa, or the bed in the bedroom. The shape of your room will determine what shape of rug you need to buy, square rugs or rectangular rugs.
The most common large sizes are the 6’x9’, 8’x10’, 9’x12’ and 12’x15’. You may find a rug that will measure 15’x18’ which is very large and not a common size. To decorate with these sizes consider placing them under a portion of the furniture so that only a small portion sticks out. You can also place these rugs in a bathroom or kitchen as well as down the hallway as part of the center point of the room. These larger sizes are perfect for covering most of the living room or dining room.

Area rugs are the best way to warm up your home this winter season. This guide offers a few tips on choosing and buying the perfect area rug for your home this year.
Measuring For The Rug
When you are ready to add a rug to your room, you need to make sure that you end up with the right size. Measuring before you leave will ensure a perfect fit. What is the best way to measure for your room? Use a tape measure and a plain white flat sheet. Decide where you want the rug to be placed at in the room. Measure the size you want to get. If you want it to go under the furniture just a little then make sure that you count it. Now measure out the sheet the size that you want the rug to be. Fold it if needed to make sure that you have the right size. Now you want to place the flat sheet down where you are going to place the rug if you get it. Doing this will give you a visual on how much room your rug will take up and if you need to consider placing it at a different location.
When measuring for your area rug, you want to make sure that you are counting the vents or electrical outlets that are cut out in the floor. You don’t want to cover these vents unless you do not use them any more. You also want to check the clearance of the door. Make sure that you can get the door open and closed without dragging it across the sheet. If you think it is a close fit then keep in mind that the rug is going to be thicker then the sheet.
Hardwood Flooring
If you have hardwood flooring down, you may want to place an area rug down and leave about eight inches of hardwood flooring showing around each side of the rug to accent the look. Make sure that you measure the same distance all around the room from the wall to the rug so you have a perfectly centered area rug and the same amount of hardwood flooring showing on all directions.
