Mastering the Master Bedroom

One of the most important rooms in any house is the master bedroom.  From newlyweds who love to design their first bedroom to parents who simply need a place to escape to, the master bedroom should be given plenty of attention to make sure that it creates the calm, peaceful environment that it was originally intended to have.

When designing your master bedroom, ask yourself what pieces of furniture you will need in the room.  Begin with the largest pieces and work your way down.  For example, what size of bed do you want for the room?  If space and your budget allow, consider opting for a queen or king sized bed in order to give you and your mate plenty of room to sleep without disturbing the other person.  Next, consider what pieces of accent furniture you need in the bedroom.  A chest of drawers is always very useful when it comes to storing clothes and other items as well as displaying jewelry, pictures or even lamps.  Many people also enjoy adding an armoire to the bedroom.  One of the best things about armoires is that they are so versatile; not only can they store clothes and other linens, but they can also hide a television or other entertainment items creating a clean, crisp look throughout the room.  When deciding what items of furniture to add to your room, don’t forget the small pieces, too.  Items such as side tables or nightstands can be an invaluable asset to any bedroom.  Look for pieces that contain one or more drawers so that you can easily store items such as medicine or reading materials for easy access in the evening or during the night.

When you begin adding furniture to your bedroom, it won’t be long before you will realize that you need to accessorize it with various décor items!  Look for wall art, modern area rugs and interesting knickknacks that will give the room an interesting look.  Since most master bedrooms come complete with a master bathroom as well, be sure to remember that you will need to decorate that area as well.  Choose a shower curtain, sink accessories and rugs that will look coordinated when placed together in a small space.  It isn’t necessary that these items perfectly match the décor found in the master bedroom, but if either room is visible from the other room, it will be important to at least harmonize the color schemes.

When you’re working on turning your master bedroom into the oasis it was originally intended to be, keep in mind that you don’t have to make every change overnight.  Begin with what changes you can afford, both in time and money, and work your way down the list from there.  The smallest changes – such as a new mirror hung above a dresser of drawers – can provide more of an effect that you might expect.  It will require extra effort to turn your master bedroom into a place that reflects your personality, but when you find yourself relaxing in it at the end of a busy day, you’ll be glad you made the changes.
