Create A Cottage Look
One thing about a cottage look is that it is bright so any way you can get a bright look in your room is going to help you decorate cottage style. When shopping at a thrift shop, search for old curtains, fabric, or clothing that has the perfect print that is light and colorful. Most cottage colors are soft, like blue or yellow but they can also be pastel colors as well. You want to leave the windows as open as possible but you can hang up the curtains and push them to the side so the light can come through the windows and brighten up the room.
Lamps don’t have to match but they do need to be bright white. If you find a lamp that you like then buy it and make your lampshade from the fabric that you found earlier. Covering a lampshade is a no-sew project and you will love the way you can personalize it. Hang some simple beads from the bottom for an old fashion look. Buy a lamp with a cup or saucer on the bottom. Use this empty container to place some seashells in.
Look in the thrift shop for old suitcases. You can stack old suitcases in a corner and place knick-knacks on the top. They don’t take up a lot of space and it gives your cottage look a vintage look too. These suitcases can also be used as extra storage space.
Look for some antique books in a thrift shop. You may even want to take some light colored material to cover up the books and stack them on top of the suitcases.
If you find see-through vases, you can place some beaded necklaces in them and set them on the shelf or table. Find a rectangle basket that can be placed on the coffee table with a simple vase of flowers.
The floors are always simple with the cottage look. Area rugs can be used under the coffee table or in front of a chair. Braided rugs look simple and traditional. If you don’t have these rugs you may find a great buy on an area rug. They come in different sizes and shapes. Rectangles and squares or ovals are the perfect designs for the cottage look.
